Brian Gustafson
Brian Gustafson is a partner in the San Francisco office of Haynes Boone. His practice emphasizes strategic patent counselling and prosecution in technology areas including computer science, cloud computing, electronics, semiconductor fabrication, optics, machine learning and visual effects. He helps his clients align their patent portfolios with their business goals to identify and protect innovations that secure technology leadership and provide the best business outcomes.
Brian advises both large corporations and startups in computer software, artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies, with a focus on aligning patent strategies with emerging technologies like large language models and computer vision. His extensive technical experience enables him to help clients protect innovations and ensure they support their business objectives.
Brian has previous experience as a research assistant for Professor Lawrence Lessig, Stanford Law School, assisting with his book "The Future of Ideas: The Fate of the Commons in a Connected World" (2001).
Brian has significant technical experience as a research assistant with the Linfield College physics department and Linfield Research Institute (1996-1998, 1999) focusing on investigative research involving surface physics, field emission, and sonoluminescence. He also has technical experience as a research fellow for the Michigan State University physics and chemistry departments (1998), which formed the basis of his senior honors thesis entitled “Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Determination of Protein Orientation.” He also worked as a teaching assistant for the Linfield College physics department (1998-2000).
