Leadership has always underpinned our firm culture. That’s why we are proud of our HB Building Leaders program, which focuses on developing the people, practice and community leadership potential of our attorneys. From inclusion and team dynamics, innovating with new practices and ways of providing our services to leading in the various ways that are important to our constituencies, HB Building Leaders helps us meet the challenges of tomorrow.
Key components of the HB Building Leaders curriculum are:

Milestone Development Programs
HayBoo U
At HayBoo U, our newest lawyers learn about the firm’s history of leading in our local communities, as well as the people and practice leadership that has led to continuing successful growth. Emphasizing that everyone at HB is viewed through a leadership lens, we highlight self-knowledge and the importance of flexing to the leadership styles of others as keys to early career success. A junior associate panel offers practical guidance on the myriad ways to show up as a leader at HB from day one. As at each program, participants leave with a concrete plan for how to take the next steps in their leadership journeys.
At HayBoo U, our newest lawyers learn about the firm’s history of leading in our local communities, as well as the people and practice leadership that has led to continuing successful growth. Mid-Level Associate Seminar
Reconvening two years later at the Mid-Level Seminar, associates revisit their self-assessments from HayBoo U and build on the notion of leadership of self and how leadership of others is becoming an increasingly important part of the job. Acknowledging the differing practice requirements of each specialty across the Firm means that there is no single ‘right’ way to lead. Exploring different leadership styles guide the participants to connect with the styles that most authentically resonate with them. We equip them with accountability strategies to ensure that leadership development does not stall between these milestone development programs.

Reflecting on their individual leadership journeys thus far, the Senior Associate Seminar is the right time to take leadership of others to the next level and more intentionally execute on plans for their community leadership presence. The Five Principles of Exemplary Leadership from The Leadership Challenge introduced earlier in the curriculum serves as a framework in which to conceptualize and put into practice initiatives to further their self-identified areas for growth. Multiple opportunities are offered firmwide throughout the year hold up exemplary leaders in our communities – current and past Firm leaders, alumni, and friends of the Firm in leadership positions in the wider legal industry come to speak to our help our people understand Haynes Boones leadership priorities.

New Partner Toolkit
Our newly elevated partners have several doses of leadership at the New Partner Toolkit. Taught by a combination of internal and external experts, separate workshops dedicated to the importance of inclusive leadership and successfully navigating difficult conversations are two leadership competencies the Firm ensures are well-covered as they take on the new mantle. However, leadership is also woven throughout the other program topics, including professional responsibility, ethics, and pro bono topics – Leadership is the theme of our New Partner Toolkit program. Now familiar with the fundamentals of lawyer leadership, these new partners are ready to serve as trusted advisors both within the Firm and make an impact the various communities in which we operate.

Further, at the end of 2024, we launched the HB Building Leaders Nonprofit Leadership Academy to encourage and equip people at all levels of the firm to engage with and lead non-profit organizations.
