Biography
Peter A. Halprin is a partner in the Insurance Recovery Practice Group in Haynes Boone’s New York office. Peter is a Chambers USA-ranked attorney, described as having “a standout reputation for his expertise in policyholder representation,” with one source noting he “goes above and beyond for his clients and is a force for good in the industry.” (Chambers USA, Chambers and Partners, 2023-2024)
Peter is well-known for his work with high-value claims concerning issues such as business interruption, cybersecurity and wrongful death suits.
Over the course of his career, Peter has arbitrated, litigated, and mediated claims recovering hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance proceeds, involving a broad range of insurance policies, including Boiler & Machinery, Builder’s Risk, Cast Insurance, Commercial Crime, Cyber, Directors & Officers (D&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), Errors & Omissions (E&O), Event Cancellation, Fidelity, General Liability (GL), Hospital Professional Liability (HPL), Inland Marine, Kidnap & Ransom (KKR), Marine Cargo, Media Liability, Performance Disruption, Pollution Legal Liability (PLL/EIL), Products Liability, Property, Reps & Warranties (R&W), Technology E&O, Trade Credit, and Workers’ Compensation.
His global client base spans diverse industries, including entertainment, financial services, government, healthcare, hospitality, professional services, private equity, and real estate.
Peter also drafts coverage analyses and correspondence and advises captive insurance companies regarding reinsurance recoveries. In this area, Peter has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in reinsurance proceeds for captive insurance companies.
Peter acts as counsel for U.S. and foreign companies in domestic and international arbitrations, including both ad hoc (ARIAS, Bermuda Form, London) as well as institutional (AAA, ICC, ICDR, JAMS, LCIA) arbitration forums. He has served as both party-appointed and sole arbitrator and is a Member of the AAA National Roster of Arbitrators, the AIADR's Presidential Panel of Arbitrators, the ARIAS Asia Panel of Arbitrators, the CPR Institute's Distinguished Panels of Neutrals (including the Insurance-Policyholder Coverage Panel), and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre's Reserve Panel of Arbitrators.
Peter is an active writer and speaker, appearing frequently at national conferences and on podcasts. With nearly 400 writings and press appearances, his work has appeared in, among others, Law360, Business Insurance, Bloomberg, Claims Journal, Mealey's, New York Law Journal, Practical Law, Thomson Reuters, and The Wall Street Journal. He has also contributed to or been recognized for his efforts contributing to such leading treatises as A Practical Guide to Cyber Insurance for Businesses, New Appleman Sports and Entertainment Insurance, Liability Insurance in International Arbitration and Environmental Liability and Insurance Recovery.
Peter lives in Greenwich Village and is the proud father of twins. He also is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

- Representing a global media company and the largest owner and operator of bowling centers in the world, in pandemic property insurance litigation in New York state court and on appeal.
- Representing a leading global entertainment company in an event cancellation insurance matter dismissing an insurer’s attempt to bring suit, Hiscox Dedicated Corp. Member v. Feld Entm’t, Inc., 580 F. Supp. 3d 206 (E.D. Va. 2022)
- Representing a leading U.S. multinational financial services corporation in various D&O and E&O insurance disputes as well as advising on policy wording and risk management issues.
- Representing a leading U.S. media company in an EPLI coverage dispute and advising on policy wording and risk management issues.
- Representing a leading U.S. healthcare company in multibillion dollar opioid insurance coverage litigation pending in Delaware and Rhode Island state courts.
- Representing the largest public housing authority in North America in New York state court and appraisal, and the nation’s largest passenger rail corporation, in Superstorm Sandy litigations in which each suffered billions in damages.
- Representing a leading U.S. health care technology services company in a wrongful death insurance coverage dispute.
- Representing numerous Broadway entities and traveling shows, movie studios, and television shows in connection with pandemic event cancellation disputes.
- Representing and advising health care companies, law firms, manufacturing companies, and other entities in connection with insurance coverage for cyber-attacks and incidents.
- Advising leading U.S. healthcare companies in connection with mass tort liabilities arising from medical incidents.
- Advising a global manufacturing concern in connection with insurance coverage for PFAS liabilities.
Arbitration Disputes and Counseling
- Serving as a party-appointed arbitrator in a confidential trade credit insurance dispute under the AAA-ICDR rules.
- Serving as a party-appointed arbitrator in a confidential commercial dispute under the AAA rules.
- Serving as a party-appointed arbitrator in a commercial dispute under the ICC rules between a group of insurers and their service providers.
- Representing a captive insurer in an ad hoc reinsurance arbitration, that includes elements of the ARIAS-US rules, seeking more than $20 million in damages in relation to a workers’ compensation reinsurance program.
- Representing a global software manufacturer in an ad hoc London arbitration seeking approximately $15 million in damages relating to insurance coverage under a technology professional liability policy.
- Representing a European financial institution in a series of LCIA and ICC arbitrations seeking more than $20 million in damages relating to insurance coverage under trade credit policies arising out of insolvencies in Latin America.
- Representing a health and fitness company in a Bermuda Form ad hoc arbitration relating to insurance coverage under an employment practices liability policy arising out of civil proceedings against the company.
- Representing a global paper company in an ICDR arbitration relating to retrospective premium issues under a workers’ compensation program.
- Representing a foam insulation company in an ARIAS ad hoc arbitration relating to retrospective premium issues under a workers’ compensation program.
- Representing a global beauty company in the Southern District of New York to confirm an arbitration award relating to liability under a trademark agreement with Indian parties and to enjoin proceedings in India.
- Representing a global analytics company in the Southern District of New York to compel arbitration in relation to liability under a joint venture involving a Chinese company.
- Representing a U.S. financial institution in New York state court to compel arbitration of insurance coverage issues under an E&O policy.
