Kreick and Tanabe in AHLA on HHS's Security Rule Proposed HIPAA Updates

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights recently proposed updates to the HIPAA Security Rule to address the increase in cyberthreats to the healthcare industry. Haynes Boone attorneys Jennifer Kreick and Thomas Tanabe authored an article for the American Health Law Association explaining the proposal and what to expect moving forward.

On January 6, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking titled “HIPAA Security Rule to Strengthen the Cybersecurity of Electronic Protected Health Information” (Proposed Rule). The purpose of the Proposed Rule is to bolster the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule by increasing cybersecurity measures to “better protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information” (ePHI) obtained or maintained by covered entities and business associates (regulated entities).
