Biography
John Craven is a counsel in the Energy, Power and Natural Resources Practice Group in Haynes Boone’s Houston office.
John’s practice focuses on advising energy companies in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and commercial arrangements in the upstream, midstream and downstream oil & gas sector. John’s practice also focuses on hydrogen, carbon capture & sequestration, and other energy transition projects.

Energy Transition Matters
- Nucor Corporation, the nation’s largest steel manufacturer, in an agreement with ExxonMobil to capture, transport, and store carbon from the company's direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Convent, Louisiana.
- Global integrated energy company in connection with two separate joint ventures to develop carbon capture, utilization and sequestration projects along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
- Ethanol producer in connection with carbon capture, utilization and sequestration project in the Midwest.
- Diversified downstream energy company in connection with multiple carbon capture, utilization and sequestration projects in Texas.
- Global energy company in preparation of LH2 Sale and Purchase Agreement LH2 facility.
Acquisitions and Divestitures
- Represented Chesapeake Energy Corporation in its:
- $1.4 billion sale of the Brazos Valley region of its Eagle Ford assets to WildFire Energy I LLC (named by the Association for Corporate Growth Houston as the Upstream Deal of the Year and Overall Deal of the Year in 2023).
- $1.4 billion sale of approximately 2,300 wells in the black oil portion of its Eagle Ford asset, primarily in Dimmit, LaSalle and McMullen counties, to INEOS Energy.
- divesture of its remaining Eagle Ford oil and gas assets to SilverBow Resources, Inc. for $700 million.
- Represented Diversified Energy Company PLC in its $410 million acquisition of oil and gas assets from Oaktree Capital Management, L.P.
- Represented Callon Petroleum Company in its:
- sale of all its Eagle Ford oil and gas assets to Ridgemar Energy Operating, LLC for $655 million in cash with an additional contingent consideration up to $45 million.
- $475 million acquisition of the Midland Basin assets of Percussion Petroleum Operating II, LLC, with contingent consideration up to $62.5 million.
- Public energy company in its acquisition of $2.65 billion of oil and gas interests in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale
- ONEOK, Inc. in its strategic $280 million acquisition of a 450-mile natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline system from Easton Energy.
- Public midstream service provider in its $50 million acquisition of crude oil storage and transportation assets located in Texas.
- Public energy company – Divestiture of $34 million of oil and gas assets, including equity in pipeline entity, located in the Barnett Shale
- Public energy company – Divestiture of $77 million of oil and gas assets located in Southern Oklahoma
