12 Haynes Boone Lawyers and 4 Practices Ranked in Chambers Global 2025

The Chambers Global guide of leading international lawyers ranked 12 Haynes Boone lawyers in its 2025 edition.

The international directory also recognized four Haynes Boone practice groups: Banking and Finance, Banking and Finance: Mainly Regulatory, Derivatives, and Energy: Oil and Gas Transactional.

The firm increased both its number of attorneys and number of practice groups ranked from the Chambers Global 2024 Guide.

The Haynes Boone Derivatives team “receives market-wide praise for the breadth of its practice” and is “particularly noted for its strength in the energy sector.” 

One client praised the newly ranked Oil and Gas Practice Group saying, “The Haynes Boone team is very sophisticated not only in the legal realm but in the commercial business complexities of the upstream oil and gas business.” Another stated, “We have yet to have a question or concern which was not fully and adequately addressed by Haynes Boone in an expeditious manner.” 

Market sources also applauded the Banking and Finance team, which received two new practice rankings, saying, “The lawyers always understand complex issues and come up with good solutions for tough negotiation points,” and “Haynes Boone provides very creative solutions, coupled with an incredibly experienced and deep team.”

Global Individual Rankings

Chambers ranks Partner Rob Lauer, co-chair of the firm’s Franchise and Distribution Practice Group, among the top 22 lawyers globally in Franchising. This is Lauer’s 15th year to be ranked in Chambers Global.

U.S. Individual Rankings

Partner and Firm Co-Founder Michael Boone is ranked in the Corporate/M&A (International & Cross-Border) Practice, because he “has a longstanding corporate practice and is highly experienced across the full spectrum of transactional work.” 

In the Intellectual Property - Patent Practice, Partner David McCombs ranks among the nation’s top lawyers, with Chambers Global noting that he “counts global technology giants among his client roster, regularly representing corporations in IPRs, patent litigation and appeals.” 

The guide also ranks Partner Matthew Frankle as a U.S. leader in Derivatives, saying he “comes particularly recommended for his in-depth knowledge of margin loans.” One client added, "Matt has hands-on experience and expertise in equity derivative products and has a commercial mind.” 

New York Office Managing Partner Craig Unterberg joins the Chambers Global ranks in Banking and Finance: Mainly Regulatory. One market source said, “Craig is terrific. He is keenly attuned to market developments and is commercial in his recommendations.” Another stated, “Craig goes above and beyond to help his clients meet urgent or time-sensitive demands. He offers highly technical and nuanced advice.” 

Partner Giorgio Bovenzi is also newly ranked in Banking and Finance: Mainly Regulatory, with a source saying, “Giorgio has outstanding regulatory and industry knowledge. He has a particularly remarkable ability to see the big picture on a matter, whatever its size and complexity.” 

Partner Hugh Tucker ranks in both Energy: Oil and Gas (Transactional) and Projects in the 2025 directory, where a source said, “Hugh is an excellent lawyer, who understands the need of the client and is very efficient in the way he provides his service.” 

Partner Jeremy Kennedy is also ranked in Energy: Oil and Gas (Transactional) for the first year, with one client saying he “focuses his practice in the oil and gas space, representing clients active in all streams. He is experienced across an array of A&D transactions.”  

Derivatives Partner Brian Sung is listed as an up-and-coming attorney who has a “burgeoning practice in the New York office. He is regularly called upon by financial institutions and hedge funds for a variety of bespoke derivatives transactions.”

U.K. Individual Rankings

New Haynes Boone Partner Nick Davis is ranked as a leading U.K. lawyer in Energy and Natural Resources: Mining: International. A market source said, “Nick Davis very commercial. He is able to cut through the noise.” 

Partner Melanie Willems, chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group in Haynes Boone’s London office is ranked as a top U.K. lawyer in International Arbitration. One market source praised her saying, “Melanie has a wealth of knowledge, unmatched perseverance and determination. She is very good at encouraging a large team of lawyers to work in tandem to achieve a symphony of her strategic orchestra.”

Mexico Individual Rankings

In the Tax: Non-Contentious practice category, Mexico City Partner Edgar Klee is recognized for “assisting clients from the automotive, manufacturing and logistics spheres with their non-contentious tax mandates in Mexico.” Clients added "Edgar Klee is highly reliable and possesses priceless knowledge of cross-border tax transactions.”
