On December 6, 2023, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a concept paper outlining its new cybersecurity strategy for the health care sector. The paper contains key insights regarding developments the health care industry should watch for in 2024, including changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule anticipated to be considered starting in Spring 2024, new cybersecurity requirements for hospitals participating in Medicare and Medicaid, establishment of new voluntary health care-sector specific cybersecurity performance goals, and potential financial support and incentives for hospitals that implement certain high-impact cybersecurity practices.
