Texas Environmental Superconference is 2009 ABA Environmental Program of the Year
– The annual Texas Environmental Superconference
, an event that Haynes and Boone, LLP has actively supported since 1998, has been named winner of the first-ever “State or Local Bar Environment, Energy and Resources Program of the Year” award from the Section of Environment, Energy and Resources (SEER) of the American Bar Association.Jeff Civins
, the Austin-based Haynes and Boone partner who has chaired the conference since its inception, received the honor on behalf of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, at the ABA SEER Annual Meeting Aug. 8 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco. The award was presented by the outgoing SEER chair, John C. Cruden, the deputy assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division.
“This national recognition is a tribute to the many hundreds of volunteers who have worked together over the years to create a conference that is both fun and informative and that fosters conversation among environmental stakeholders,” Mr. Civins said.
Added fellow Partner Mary Mendoza
, the Superconference liaison to the sponsoring Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas: “It’s gratifying to know that the section’s hard work is appreciated by the ABA, but it really has become a labor of love for our members. It’s no wonder our event sells out every year.”
The conference is one of a kind. It encourages audience participation and networking, and has skits, quizzes, and prizes. For the past several years, the conference has had its own song. Last year, the theme was “Viva Las Vegas.” This year, the 22nd, the theme was Disney songs and the conference was entitled "Superconferenceaustintexasexpialidocious." Proceeds for the conference are used by the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section for, among other things, student awards and internships, law school conferences and pro bono activities.
In addition to the State Bar of Texas Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section, sponsors include the Air & Waste Management Association – Southwest Section, Water Environment Association of Texas, the Texas Association of Environmental Professionals, The Auditing Roundtable and the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy & Resources.
