Judith Elkin of Haynes and Boone Assumes Leadership of Insolvency Professionals’ Organizations
NEW YORK – Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Judith Elkin has been appointed chair of the International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) and co-chair of the International Bar Association's Section on Insolvency Restructuring and Creditors' Rights (SIRC).
Ms. Elkin, who began her two-year IWIRC chairmanship in October, leads a board of 29 women insolvency professionals.
Founded in 1994, IWIRC is an international professional association that works to enhance the professional status and reputation of women in insolvency practice. With 32 networks in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe and Asia, and nearly 1100 members around the world, IWIRC provides opportunities for networking, professional development, leadership and mentoring on both the local and international level, as well as valuable links to other established professional associations. Each network, as well the international umbrella organization, sponsors both substantive and social programs in various locales around the world, most recently in New Orleans and Rome. IWIRC members and supporters include attorneys, accountants, turnaround managers, bankers, judges, academics and other insolvency professionals.
Effective January 1, 2011, Ms. Elkin will become co-chair of SIRC, which is led by co-chairs from a common law country and a civil law country. Ms. Elkin’s co-chair is Dr. David Jenny, a lawyer with the Swiss law firm, Vischer AG.
The IBA is the world’s leading organization of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies, influencing the development of international law reform and the future of the legal profession throughout the world. The IBA’s Section on Insolvency Restructuring and Creditors' Rights focuses on issues specific to bankruptcy, restructuring and insolvency in all jurisdictions around the world and works to promote and facilitate cross-border cooperation.
In her practice at Haynes and Boone, Ms. Elkin is a partner in the bankruptcy and business restructuring section, which she chaired for five years. Ms. Elkin has nearly 30 years of experience representing debtors, creditors, creditors' committees, lenders, trustees, acquirors and other parties in interest in reorganization proceedings and financial restructurings. She is also a bankruptcy litigator with particular expertise in bankruptcy appeals. She speaks frequently on insolvency issues both in the U.S. and internationally. She has represented clients in some of the largest recent bankruptcy filings including Enron, SemCrude, Adelphia, Federal-Mogul, Delphi, ASARCO and General Motors. She has been named a New York Super Lawyer in Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights in 2007 – 2010.
