Haynes and Boone Women Attorneys Top D Magazine Best Women Lawyers Ranking
DALLAS – Ten women partners from Haynes and Boone, LLP have been ranked among the 126 attorneys recognized in D Magazine’s Best Women Lawyers in Dallas for 2010. The number of honorees was the most of any law firm.
The Haynes and Boone attorneys are:
Deborah Coldwell, selected in Franchise and Development: Ms. Coldwell is a business litigator focusing on franchise, distribution, contract disputes and business tort litigation. She has successfully tried jury trials, bench trials and arbitrations on behalf of franchisors and distributors and has sought and received preliminary and permanent injunctive relief for franchisors. She has a practical approach to litigation and assists clients to find a workable strategy in each case she handles.
Nina Cortell, selected in Appellate: Ms. Cortell, the co-chair of Haynes and Boone's Appellate Section, is ranked by Chambers USA as one of the top appellate lawyers in Texas (2009). For more than 30 years, Ms. Cortell has represented corporations, individuals and public entities in appeals that have put her at the forefront of Texas appellate practice and earned her national recognition for her experience in handling large, complex appeals.
Greta Cowart, selected in ERISA: During her 24-year career, Ms. Cowart has gained invaluable experience in all aspects of complex employee benefit plan issues. Her extensive knowledge of employee benefits and executive compensation provides her with the background to assist corporations quickly with plan design and administration issues, including litigation of benefit disputes.
Sharon Freytag, selected in Appellate: Ms. Freytag is an experienced appellate lawyer. She led an appellate team that obtained en banc review in a precedent-setting Fifth Circuit appeal - a remarkable achievement, given that the court grants less than one percent of all requests for en banc review. She then persuaded the court to reverse an order vacating an arbitration award, setting the standard for vacatur in the Fifth Circuit. Ms. Freytag’s oral advocacy skills are further complemented by her persuasive writing and analytical skills.
Wei Wei Jeang, selected in Intellectual Property: Ms. Jeang focuses on the procurement, licensing and enforcement of intellectual property, including patents, copyright, trademarks and trade secrets, for high tech clients. She also works closely with clients on patent reexaminations and legal opinions related to patent infringement, validity, freedom-to-operate, clearance, and other issues. She works with clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to solo inventors to secure and protect their patent rights.
Vicki Martin-Odette, selected in Tax: Ms. Martin-Odette is chair of Haynes and Boone’s Business Planning, Taxation and Benefits Section. She has represented U.S. and foreign individuals and entities with regard to the legal and tax issues related to their businesses and investment activities. She has also represented investment funds and private and publicly held entities with regard to business planning and taxation matters including formations, capital raising and placement, mergers and acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings.
Joyce Mazero, selected in Franchise and Development: Ms. Mazero leads the Haynes and Boone Restaurant and Retail Industries and Franchise and Distribution law practices. She has substantial business experience as lead project partner assisting clients in developing strategy, structuring, negotiating, implementing, and resolving disputes for product and service-based domestic and international license, franchise, distribution, and shared services systems. This includes organizational and governance matters for purchasing groups, cooperatives, manufacturers, suppliers, joint ventures, and sales representative systems as well as the full gauntlet of relationship, competition, and enforcement issues associated with such systems.
Karen Nelson, selected in Bank Lending: Ms. Nelson has more than 30 years experience in representing lenders and borrowers in secured and unsecured commercial lending transactions, including syndicated financings, merger and acquisition financings, and cross-border and multi-currency financings. She also has substantial workout and debt restructuring experience. Her industry-specific lending experience includes media and telecommunications, energy, manufacturing, insurance and financial institutions. She has served as chair of the finance section, as a member of the firm's strategic advisory committee and as the chair of the firm’s service excellence committee.
Ann Saegart, selected in Commercial Real Estate: Ms. Saegart began practicing in the real estate section of Haynes and Boone in 1978 and served as chair of the real estate section from 2000 to 2007. Her practice focuses primarily on representation of funds, pension plans and advisers, REITs and other institutional investors in all aspects of real estate and hotel transactions, representation of corporate real estate users in managing and leveraging their portfolios, as well as headquarters and retail acquisitions and dispositions and traditional, structured and layered finance arrangements, both securitized and private. During the course of her practice, Ms. Saegart has been involved with structuring, documenting and negotiating numerous office, industrial, hotel and special use portfolios throughout the United States, as well as active involvement in all aspects of a number of mixed use projects.
Jan Sharry, selected in Corporate Finance/Mergers: Ms. Sharry has more than 30 years of experience in diverse areas of corporate finance, including mergers and acquisitions, public offerings, private placements and other securities offerings (including representation in international offerings). Her extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions includes hostile, friendly and cross-border transactions, as well as acquisitions and sales of assets in the bankruptcy arena. Ms. Sharry has served as head of the corporate finance section at Haynes and Boone and currently serves on firm’s the board of directors.
